Here goes nothing…
With a list literally 3 feet long, we decided to start with the pond - mostly because it would feel really good to see an ‘after’ from “one weekend of work”. Also - this project would keep us mostly in the shade, which was essential given that it was August in Portland, and this was some seriously HARD work.
We found out quickly that we were VERY wrong about how long it would take, which quickly became a trend for us as brand new Farm Folks. The scale of everything out here is way bigger than we think, and when you forget a tool in the barn, or need to run a kid to the toilet or to get a band aid, it’s a trek.
The pond ended up taking us four times more than a weekend, but it was a really fun project that the kids enjoyed helping with - we drained it, re-rocked it, repaired some leaks, added a filtration system, and finished the ‘brook' up to where the freshwater spring spits out.
While the pond project dragged on, early mornings and late evenings were spent making progress on the front patio. Two hugely rewarding 'afters’ were close to complete before fall kicked in!
In mid-September, we celebrated one month as farmers by cutting the grapes! The girls were huge helpers in making very sticky and delicious grape juice :)
